Nearly a quarter of Covid-19 tests done at Tallaght centre record positive results

Nearly a quarter of Covid-19 tests done at a Dublin centre have recorded positive results.

The Tallaght Stadium testing centre recorded a staggeringly high positivity rate of 23% - the second highest among all self-referral testing centres in the country.

Buncrana in Donegal leads the way with a shocking 28%, according to HSE figures released to Newstalk.

County Louth has the highest overall positivity rate, with 12% of all tests coming back positive, while Offaly, Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan make up the top five most infected counties.

Behind Buncrana and Tallaght sit Castlesaunderson in Cavan at 18%, followed by Ardee in Louth and South Douglas in Cork who both have a rate of 14%.

Meanwhile, walk in centres in Tullamore and Limerick also returned eye-watering positivity rates, at 22% and 16.7% respectively.

Head of the IMO's GP Committe Dr Denis McAuley said he was shocked by the numbers.

"It is jaw-droppingly high," he said.

"I have never seen such a high positivity rate in any series before this.

"I think it just means that every fourth person who has, probably, mild symptoms who goes into the swab centre is actually coming back positive.

"Positivity rates, remember, could be 2.8% nationally - we get very excited when they're about 9 or 10%.

"But 25/26% is exceptional."
