Nearly 400 new homes planned for outskirts of Stevenston

A huge estate of nearly 400 homes with 18 different types of houses could be built on farmland in Stevenston.

Persimmon Homes wants to build 365 two-storey houses and 24 flats in Mayfield Road in the town.

The development would have terraced, semi, and detached houses offering two to five bedrooms, according to plans lodged with North Ayrshire Council .

A design statement said: “The proposed house types are of a size and scale which ensure that they can contribute towards the supply of housing in the local area, thereby meeting an identified need.”

It added: “The introduction of flats will also increase the range of homes whilst also appealing to a greater range of potential homeowners and creating an entrance feature.”

The flats would have two bedrooms.

There would be no bungalows among the 389 homes total.

The proposed 14 hectare site sits 1.4km from Stevenston town centre and 1.2km from Saltcoats.

A developer report said the land is zoned as greenbelt in the current local development plan. But a proposed replacement local development plan has classed it for residential use instead.

Cars will mainly enter the housing development from the A738 High Road with additional access from Fleck Avenue.

Play areas are also part of the bid.

No decision has been made yet on the planning application lodged by Persimmon Homes.

The design statement added: “It’s crucial that the site begins to contribute to the housing supply in the area as soon as possible.

“Other new Persimmon housing in North Ayrshire is selling well – confirming the demand in the area – and this site will provide continuity through the same housebuilder in the local area.”

Twenty five people attended a consultation event about the plan, which took place in Saltcoats North Parish Church on August 23.
