CHICAGO _ Nearly 40 people were shot in Chicago over the weekend, but gun violence is still slightly down from the record level of last year, according to data kept by the Tribune.
Four people were killed and 35 other people were wounded from Friday afternoon trough early Monday, according to police. In a span of just three hours early Sunday, two people were killed and seven others were wounded.
As of early Monday, the city has logged 228 homicides this year compared with 245 homicides this time last year, according to Tribune data.
The number of shooting victims has decreased by about 8 percent from last year. At least 1,278 people have been shot so far compared with 1,391 people this time last year, according to Tribune data.
The last fatal shooting of the weekend happened about 2:40 p.m. Sunday in the 100 block of North Parkside Avenue in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side.
An 18-year-old man was shot in the back and pronounced dead at the scene. A 15-year-old boy was shot in the shin, and he was stabilized at Mount Sinai Hospital.
About 16 hours earlier, three men were wounded in on the same block.
Earlier Sunday, three men were seriously wounded outside Zachary's For Cocktails at 5368 N. Milwaukee Ave. in the Gladstone Park neighborhood, police said.
The youngest victim of the weekend was a 9-year-old boy who was grazed in the head by a bullet about 8:10 p.m. Saturday in the 2500 block of West 69th Street, police said.
The boy was in a car when the driver apparently got into an argument with another motorist, police said. He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was listed in good condition.
