Nearly 3,000 new cases of coronavirus confirmed in UK

The number of people who have tested positive for coronavirus in the last 24 hours has reached nearly 3,000 for a second day.

Latest official figures from the Department of Health confirm that as of 9am there were 2,948 lab-confirmed cases of Covid-19.

This is only 40 cases lower than Sunday's figure which was the highest recorded in three months.

Overall, 350,100 cases have been confirmed.

Another three coronavirus-related deaths were also recorded in all settings.

Figures now show that 41,554 people had died in the UK within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of September 7, 2020.

There are currently 756 people in hospital with 69 of those patients on a ventilator.

This is a daily increase of 124.

On Monday (September 7) NHS England said a further four people who tested positive for coronavirus have died in hospital in England, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals to 29,611.

The patients were aged between 76 and 95 and all had known underlying health conditions.

The dates of the deaths were all on September 5. No deaths were reported with no positive Covid-19 test result.

Public Health Wales said no further deaths had been reported, with the total number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic remaining at 1,597.
