Nearly 27,000 people have died in UK hospitals after testing positive for coronavirus

The number of people who have died in UK hospitals after testing positive for coronavirus is now at 26,769.

Another 209 patients have died in England, a further five patients have died in hospitals in Scotland, and five more patients have died in Wales. Northern Ireland is yet to announce its latest figures.

Scottish First Minister today asked people not to become 'distracted' by messaging from the UK government as she maintained people in Scotland should stay at home.

Confirming the 209 deaths in English hospitals, a statement from NHS England said: "A further 209 people, who tested positive for the Coronavirus (Covid-19) have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 23,358.

"Patients were aged between 40 and 99 years old. 12 of the 209 patients (aged between 55 and 97 years old) had no known underlying health condition.

"Their families have been informed."

The overall death toll will be added to later on today when deaths in care homes and community settings are factored in.

The announcement comes as the UK government published a new 50-page document with further details about the new changes to lockdown measures that will come into force in the coming days, weeks and months.

The document is called OUR PLAN TO REBUILD: The UK Government’s COVID-19 recovery strategy and has new detail on issues like schools, socialising, work and childcare.
