Nearly 250 students told to self-isolate after coronavirus case connected to Ysgol Glan Clwyd

Nearly 250 students have been forced to self-isolate after a coronavirus case was connected to a Welsh secondary school.

Year 10 pupils and 24 additional pupils at Welsh medium school Ysgol Glan Clwyd in St Asaph in Denbighshire have been told to stay at home following the announcement on Sunday.

In total 247 students will need to self-isolate up until May 17.

Denbighshire County Council's education department said everybody affected will be required to self-isolate for a period of time, NorthWalesLive reports.

All parents and carers have been informed and the council and the school have consulted with Public Health Wales.

The notice from the council was shared online by Rhyl Councillor Brian Jones.

It said: “For your information, 213 pupils from year 10 and 34 additional pupils from other years at Ysgol Glan Clwyd will need to isolate themselves until May 17 following a confirmed Covid-19 case associated with the school.

“All parents and carers have been informed and the school and authorities are working closely with Public Health Wales.

“Ysgol Glan Clwyd remains open to all other pupils and is working with Public Health Wales, the local authority and the NHS safeguarding tracking tracing testing service to ensure all appropriate measures are in place to protect students, staff, and the wider community.”

Currently there are zero cases per 100,000 people in Denbigshire based on a seven-day rolling average from April 27 to May 3.
