'Near miss' at 'dangerous' crossing same week woman hit by lorry

A pedestrian crossing "on a blind bend" has been slammed for being "dangerous" after an elderly woman was hit by a lorry.

A huge police response was seen at Aintree Retail Park on Ormskirk Road on Thursday, October 21, and a woman in her 80s was rushed to hospital.

Part of the park was quickly cordoned off, with the HGV driver stopping at the scene.

Merseyside Police yesterday confirmed the woman remains in hospital with serious leg injuries.

Since the collision, a number of people have contacted the ECHO to share their experiences with the crossing.

One woman, who asked only to be named as Mrs Gibson, wrote: "Both my elderly mum and dad had a near miss at the same crossing on Tuesday (October 19).

"This crossing just shouldn't be there, it's not fair for drivers as there are only floor road markings indicating a foot passenger crossing but no built up indications for a driver to observe on a blind bend, and it is certainly in a very dangerous place for the public.

"My mum and dad are deaf and are conditioned to look for safe places to cross.

"I feel sorry for both the driver and the lady who was injured, this could have easily been my mum.

"I don't know the full details [of the collision on October 21] but I know the retail park can make improvements."

Another said: "There just shouldn't be a pedestrian crossing on a blind bend."

With a third adding: "I am surprised this hasn't happened sooner."

The management team at Aintree Retail Park spoke of its "distress" over the accident.

A spokeswoman told the ECHO : "We are distressed that a member of the public had an accident at Aintree Retail Park on Thursday 21st October.

"We hope the lady is progressing well with her recovery."
