
KYOTO -- There was hardly anyone at Kiyomizudera temple in Kyoto on Sunday, the first Sunday after a state of emergency was extended to include all of Japan.
A UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, Kiyomizudera is famous for its hinoki wooden stage. It recently underwent three years of reroofing work on the main hall, in the hope of drawing more visitors, but numbers have been falling since the end of February.
There are currently less than half the usual number of people.
