Neal Maupay starts as Frank Lampard names Everton team for Liverpool clash

Neal Maupay will make his debut in the Merseyside derby as Everton start with a recognised forward for only the second time this season.

Frank Lampard has turned to the French attacker at the first opportunity after registration regulations prevented his involvement against Brentford and Leeds United. Deadline day signing Idrissa Gueye is also in the squad but has been named on the bench following his protracted move from Paris St Germain.

Lampard has kept his faith in playing four at the back after Nathan Patterson and Conor Coady impressed within that formation at Leeds on Tuesday night. This means Coady and James Tarkowski will be tasked with dealing with Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez, who returns following his three match ban after seeing red at Crystal Palace. Much of the talk in the build up to the derby has been about his temperament though Tarkowski said this week he expected the Uruguay forward to have learnt from the red card.

Amadou Onana partners Tom Davies and Alex Iwobi in the centre of midfield while Maupay will complete the forward line with Demarai Gray and Anthony Gordon - who have four goals in the last four games between them. It is the first time Lampard has started with a recognised striker in the Premier League this season with the exception of the tie with Nottingham Forest, when Salomon Rondon started.

EVERTON: Pickford, Patterson, Coady, Tarkowski, Mykolenko, Iwobi, Onana, Davies, Gordon, Maupay, Gray

Subs: Begovic, Keane, Allan, McNeil, Coleman, Gueye, Rondon, Vinagre, Mills
