Neal Ardley reveals new tactic to lift Notts County's spirits that cost him 'an arm and a leg'

Neal Ardley revealed how he took Notts County’s players for a walk by the River Trent in a bid to lift his players’ spirits and remind them how good they can be.

The Magpies boss and his squad embarked on a half-hour walk to a café on Monday where he spoke to the players who have just seven games left to save the season.

It came on the back of their 1-0 defeat to Exeter last weekend when the Magpies lost to the 10-man Grecians in a game that had they won would have taken them level on points with third-bottom Yeovil.

Notts bossed the game for large spells and, having seen his side beat Carlisle and draw with Morecambe, Ardley says he used the time by the Trent to remind his squad of their quality.

“A lot of the players were on a recovery day and it was just a bit of squad togetherness,” he said.

“Sometimes if they do their gym stuff, it’s just the same routine.

“We had a nice walk. I bought them a tea or coffee which cost me an arm and a leg.

“We walked for 30 minutes to a cafe, had a good chat and I wanted to reiterate that when I arrived some of the performances were way off the mark.

“But over  the last three games we have been the better team and they have given everything.

“I wanted to remind them of that.  It was just to tell them how good we can be.”
