Neal Ardley reveals how Notts County players reacted to play-off win over Barnet

Neal Ardley revealed how his Notts County players refused to indulge in wild celebrations despite booking the club’s first trip to Wembley in more than 20 years.

The Magpies are just one win away from securing their return to the EFL at the first attempt after sealing a 2-0 win over Barnet in the National League play-off semi-final at Meadow Lane.

Goals from Kristian Dennis and Callum Roberts secured the memorable victory as Ardley’s side produced a sterling performance in front of the BT Sport cameras.

They now head to the national stadium next week to face Harrogate Town in what is Notts’ first appearance at Wembley since they lost to Bradford City in 1996.

With Notts on the brink of an incredible achievement, Ardley said the players refused to be carried away with their success after full-time because they still have a job to do.

“There were no celebrations, just a quiet determination,” he said.

“They’ve all come in together and did a few high fives, but then said let’s focus on next week.

“The job is only half done and we are going to play a very strong team in the final.

“We’ve given ourselves one more opportunity, but I would have been proud of them win, lose or draw.”

Notts will he hoping to reproduce a repeat performance of their display against the Bees which saw them dominate for large spells.

Kristian Dennis headed them in front as he met Jim O’Brien’s cross before Callum Roberts lit the game up with a sensational solo effort after the break.

And Ardley added: “I was delighted with them.

“It was a thoroughly professional performance.”
