Neal Ardley plays down Craig Mackail-Smith return to Notts County

Notts County manager Neal Ardley has played down suggestions he could bring  Craig Mackail-Smith back to Meadow Lane.

The striker was highly thought of during his loan spell from Wycombe last season in which he scored a stunning goal against Mansfield to seal a long overdue derby success.

That immediately made him a darling of the Kop and some Notts fans have been eager to see  the 35-year-old forward return given the energy and work-rate he brings to the forward line.

Mackail-Smith, who scored three goals after signing on loan in January, is currently at Wycombe where he is yet to play a game this season.

But Ardley, who saw striker Kane Hemmings depart for Dundee today on a three-year deal,  said no talks have taken place with Wycombe with a view to bringing the forward back for another spell at the club.

“There’s nothing at the moment,” said Ardley.

“I’ve nothing against Craig, but that’s a conversation that hasn’t even started.

“Gareth (Ainsworth, Wycombe manager) hasn’t been circulating  his name.

“When I spoke to Gareth at the end of last year, he was one he was definitely looking to keep around.”
