Neal Ardley not taxed by Notts County's High Court problems as he plots Football League survival

Notts County have already enjoyed one victory of sorts off the pitch this week, with the High Court giving the club extra time to pay a big tax bill.

And Neal Ardley is now hoping for another win, on the pitch this time, that could give the Magpies a little bit of breathing space in their battle against relegation out of the Football League.

"It's obviously a positive," said Ardley, about Notts being given until the end of the season to settle a £200,000 tax bill after facing a winding-up petition.

"It gives the club and potential new owners a chance to sort everything out.

"It's not something that really plays on my mind or I'm looking for answers for.

"We're just looking to deal with the football at the moment.

"If we can get the football bit right in the next four weeks then we can look to grow the club and the infrastructure, and make things better.

"But these four weeks are the most important thing."

Neal Ardley hopes Notts County can be 'great again' as he welcomes Meadow Lane takeover

Bottom of League Two and two points adrift of safety, the Magpies have just five matches to preserve their proud status as the oldest Football League club rather than surrender it to, of all clubs, Nottingham Forest.

Those five matches include three away matches against Crewe, on Saturday, Crawley and Swindon Town, and two matches at Meadow Lane, against MK Dons and Grimsby Town.

And Ardley insists there will be no need for a rallying cry to his players.

"I really, genuinely, believe I don't need to," he said.

"Prior maybe to Christmas there was so much lack of belief in the dressing room from what had happened and we were trying to stoke things up a bit.

"But now I believe that these boys are as focused as they have been all season, as fit as they have been all season and I believe that no matter what I do they're ready to go out and battle for five games and give it everything to do what we need to do as a club."

Neal Ardley reveals Notts County's top scorer Kane Hemmings has undergone knee procedure

Ardley's confidence in his players is born from some impressive performances since their terrible 4-1 defeat at Cheltenham at the start of March.

Since then, Notts have won twice, drawn twice and lost only once. At a crucial moment in the season - in the club's history - they look to be hitting form and building some momentum.

"You focus on the performances," said Ardley.

"I think we've, up until now, touch wood, been locked defensively, we've been solid. We had a bit of a wake-up call in that Cheltenham game, and since then the performances have been very, very good.

"There were a lot of things we had to do when we arrived and I feel now we're fit, strong, we've got good characters - and I feel like we can finish these five games strong.

"Is it going to be enough? Are we going to get enough points? Who knows. You need a bit of luck along the way.

"But we can only worry about ourselves and our performance levels."

Elliott Hewitt ruled out of run-in as Notts County battle for survival

The Magpies will head to Gresty Road in 24th place in the table thanks to a midweek win for fellow strugglers Macclesfield, having been above the Silkmen after last Saturday's 2-2 draw with Northampton Town at Meadow Lane.

"I talk from a bit of experience from my time at Wimbledon, and I've said all along when people have talked about these emotions, that there will be twists and turns," said Ardley.

"If you look at it from the Exeter game when we was out (of the relegation zone), and then Macclesfield equalise and we concede, and so on and so forth.

"Then last minute the other night at Macclesfield, Exeter have their goalie sent off, on Saturday we have our goalie sent off. All these things that play a part in wins and points, you can get wrapped up in it all or you can just say 'nope, we've got to keep focusing'.

"What does Macclesfield winning do? It probably makes the points total that any team needs to get to a bit higher.

"We've just got to keep focused on that."
