Neal Ardley left sweating over experienced Notts County defender as relegation fight enters final four

Manager Neal Ardley says Richard Duffy's absence would be a huge blow for Notts County should he miss any of the remaining four games.

The defender was substituted during the second half of Saturday's 3-0 defeat to Crewe Alexandra with what looked like a groin injury, as the 33-year-old limped off and straight down the tunnel.

As of yet, the extent of Duffy's injury is unclear but his manager is hoping that he will not have to head into this week's Good Friday clash without him.

Freeing Notts County of relegation worry will be Neal Ardley's biggest challenge during run-in

"His injury is a big worry because he has been excellent," said Ardley.

"He has been part of the reason why we have looked solid at the back.

"This defeat was probably the first time since Cheltenham that we haven't looked solid at the back."

West Bromwich Albion youngster Alex Palmer was between the sticks for the Magpies at Gresty Road after Ardley and his back-room staff found themselves facing somewhat of a goalkeeping crisis.

First-choice Ryan Schofield was suspended following his red card against Northampton Town at Meadow Lane and his obvious replacement, Ross Fitzsimons, was ruled out of the clash after an abscess in his tooth turned nasty - almost forcing Ardley to throw 18-year-old Max Culverwell into the frame.

Thankfully for the Magpies, Schofield's instant dismissal was only punished with a one-match ban and he will return against MK Dons, but with his number two still yet to train, Culverwell could well find himself on the bench again.

Neal Ardley must find a way to instil belief in his Notts County players ahead of tough MK Dons test

"We don't know yet about Fitzsimons," said Ardley.

"He had an abscess in his tooth. He was given loads of antibiotics and medication for it and he was in a bad way.

"It turned a bit nasty and he had hot sweats and bad headaches and he has been in bed all week so he could not train.

"We had to move quick. We had to get any transfer done by a certain time or we couldn't have done it at all and then young Max (Culverwell) would have been thrown into the limelight.

"None of it is ideal, but I thought Alex (Palmer) was excellent, all things considered, and particularly during the second half when we had to throw bodies forward to try and score and we kept getting caught on the break."
