Neal Ardley explains Notts County's new 'return to play protocol' for injured stars

Notts County look set to be without Nathan Tyson for the visit of Halifax Town but the striker is making progress.

The former Nottingham Forest striker has not played since the 5-1 demolition of Chorley last month because of a knee problem.

Tyson has undergone tests to determine the extent of the injury, but it is understood not to be serious.

The 37-year-old forward is now working his back to fitness and is currently undergoing a 'return to play protocol' that manager Neal Ardley insists all players must now go through before they return to training.

"Nathan has kept feeling something in the back of his knee and he has had some tests done," said Ardley.

"We think it's coming from the bottom of his hamstring and he is getting over it.

"With our medical department, we now have a return to play protocol in which players coming back from injury have to go through certain processes.

"They have to put their bodies through certain tests before they are allowed back into a training session.

"If they do that, then at first it's very light and become a spare player at times. But then you build them up.

"It's to prevent recurrence and anything long-term.

"You want to get it right or otherwise you throw a player straight back in, they do something they haven't done in their rehab, they feel it and then you're back to square one.

"And that can sometimes lead players to be out for 12-13 weeks."

With Tyson set to miss the visit of the Shaymen, there are also doubts over Notts defender Dion Kelly-Evans and winger Sean Shields.

Both players picked up slight knocks in training but Ardley will give them tomorrow to prove their fitness.
