NCT workers take on 10-peak challenge to raise money for Mind

Six members of Nottingham City Transport's workforce took on a huge challenge over the weekend - and it was all for charity.

The group consisted of Anthony Carver-Smith, Lee McClory, Wayne Massey, Jack Smith, Paul Radford and Bobby Squires.

Every year they take on a new challenge and this year they chose The Coledale Round - a 10-peak challenge in the Lake District.

This 13-mile circular walk takes in 10 summits in the north-western fells, starting and finishing in Braithwaite, two miles from Keswick.

Anthony Carver-Smith, NCT's marketing manager, said: “We aim to do a charity challenge each year, to support a charity that has helped or supported a friend or member of the family of one of the group or a colleague we work with.

"We’ve raised money for Great Ormond Street Hospital and the Stroke Unit at Nottingham City Hospital in recent years, for example, after they looked after people close to the group and we wanted to give something back as a thank you, as well as ensuring other people could benefit from their care.

'Time to put Nottingham first in this new era of local politics'

“Mind has been chosen this year because some people in the group have experienced mental health problems, and we know people who have too.

"With 1 in 4 people in Britain experiencing a mental health problem, we felt it was important to raise awareness of the support available, particularly from Mind who have helped people close to us”

The peaks the group climbed were: Barrow (455m); Outerside (568m); Causey Pike (673m); Scar Crags (672m); Sail (773m); Crag Hill (839m); Wandope (772m); Grasmoor (852m); Hopegill Head (770m) and Grisedale Pike (791m).

The group had been training hard, and speaking before they left Mr Carver-Smith said they were ready for the challenge.

He added: "The team are regular walkers and we have been visiting the Peak and Lake Districts as part of our training. Ordinarily, we may climb a couple of summits in a day, but for our charity challenges we push ourselves to cover a longer distance and more summits in a day.

"Last year, we ascended seven summits on our charity challenge, so we had to plan to do more and have gone to 10!”

“We are all ready for the challenge, but are feeling nervous and don’t want to let down those who have donated so far, or those who would benefit from the support of Mind."

So far nearly £2,000 has been raised. You can donate here.
