Fifteen NCT centres are due to reopen from Monday – but driving tests are still on hold, it emerged yesterday.
The National Car Testing Service (NCTS) confirmed the phased reopening of test centres would begin with the licence service and driver theory test restarting on a phased basis.
Transport Minister Shane Ross said the driver testing service would not be reopening due to challenges posed by maintaining social distance in an enclosed space.
The centres re-opening in Dublin are:
- Northpoint 1 & 2, Dublin
- Deansgrange, Dublin
- Fonthill, Dublin
He said: “I can assure learner drivers that officials in my Department are looking at all available options to get car driving tests started again as soon as possible.”
Mr Ross said the services resuming would be “subject to measures designed to mitigate against the spread of Covid-19.”
Customers must book an appointment in advance with walk-in service vetoed – and all payments are by card only.
Social distancing controls will be in place including notices posted both internally and externally around the test centre and physical distancing floor markers.
In the short term NCTs will be restricted to vehicles that had a test due prior to March 28, when the four-month extension to certificates of road worthiness came into effect.
