One of the pillars of American crime drama is getting its first international spin-off — Down Under.

NCIS: Sydney will be released in 2023 by Australia's Network 10 and paid-streaming service Paramount+, they have jointly announced.

The original NCIS is one of the longest-running TV shows in the United States and remains one of the most-watched in the country.

It has three spin-offs, based in Los Angeles, New Orleans and Hawaii.

The production of the Sydney series will be led by Australian-born Shane Brennan, creator of NCIS: Los Angeles.

Paramount+ says the show will feature local stories as well as Australian actors and producers.

"We are thrilled to welcome the inaugural international series of NCIS to Australian shores," said Beverley McGarvey of ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand.

"It is such a privilege to be able to continue the legacy of such a wonderful show and incorporate the superior NCIS storytelling while introducing new Australian characters and locations.

"We can't wait to get production underway."

Production of NCIS: Sydney is due to start later this year.

Their announcement of the locally made TV series is a boost for Australia's entertainment industry after long-standing soap Neighbours was dumped by its UK broadcaster.

The UK's Channel 5 — which has been the biggest financial backer of Neighbours in recent years — decided not to renew the program after this coming British summer.

Following that announcement, production company FremantleMedia told cast and crew in an email that the show would go into hiatus.

Neighbour's ongoing success had been propped up by its popularity in the UK, where it is watched by about 1.5 million viewers a day.

But Australian audience figures have dwindled over recent years.

Last night Neighbours — which is on free-to-air channel 10 Peach at 6:30pm — had 106,000 viewers across the top five metro cities (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth).

In contrast, a repeat of NCIS on 10 Bold, another Network 10 channel, pulled in 109,000 viewers.
