NCAA tables redshirt proposal; former players can't take part in practices

The NCAA's Division I Council decided to table a proposal that would have allowed football players to play up to four games in a season without losing a year of eligibility.

The Football Oversight Committee will review the measure and report back to the group in June.

Coaches have been in favor of the proposal which would allow players, including freshman, the opportunity to get some playing time late in the season without costing them eligibility. Teams, in return, won't have to burn redshirts in order to make up for depth due to injuries or other factors.

The American Football Coaches Association has been a big supporter of the change. It was a point of concern during the group's annual meeting earlier this year:

"What the AFCA has proposed is to take the hardship rule that is in effect now, broaden it to some degree, and allow a student-athlete to play in four games or less at any time during the season, because you never know when an injury might happen, and still preserve the red-shirt. This is very student-athlete friendly," the group said in a statement back in January.

Opponents are concerned about the impact of the proposed rule at is pertains to sports other than football.
