NCAA opens door for athletes to benefit financially from name, image and likeness

Over the summer, one of the hot topics around NCAA athletics was the decision made by California to allow their student-athletes to benefit off of their name and likeness. Now, the NCAA is following suit and announced today that they will allow their student-athletes to benefit in the same way as long as it fits into NCAA guidelines.

Those guidelines are as follows:

►Assuring student-athletes are treated similarly to non-athlete students unless a compelling reason exists to differentiate.

►Maintaining the priorities of education and the collegiate experience to provide opportunities for student-athlete success.

►Ensuring rules are transparent, focused and enforceable and facilitate fair and balanced competition.

In a press release, the NCAA Board of Governors said they voted: “unanimously to permit students participating in athletics the opportunity to benefit from the use of their name, image and likeness in a manner consistent with the collegiate model.”

I completely agree with this decision, especially if it allows for the return of a few beloved NCAA video games.
