NCAA mulls eliminating the ability of schools to limit transfers

The NCAA is looking at a proposal that would eliminate the longstanding practice that allows schools to place restrictions on where athletes can transfer.

It's another in a growing number of changes the organization is considering as it pertains to the transfer rules.

The Division I Transfer Working Group reaffirmed its support of the proposal in a statement released Tuesday.

"We have strong support from the membership for allowing student-athletes to transfer and be recruited without losing their scholarships," working group chair Justin Sell, athletics director at South Dakota State, said in a statement. "We will ask the Division I Council to move forward with a vote on that proposal in June. This is meaningful change that will benefit student-athletes, schools and coaches."

The group leaders said they based their decision on feedback from schools.

Under the current structure, an athlete must be released from his current scholarship in order to accept a scholarship to play elsewhere. In some cases, coaches will only release an athlete with restrictions.

Coaches have been known to restrict players from playing for a team with the same conference or even at a school featured on the team's upcoming schedule.

The proposal is among several being considered, including one that would allow players to transfer immediately if they meet certain academic requirements.

The group will meet again after garnering more feedback before putting the proposal up for a vote by the Division I Council in June. If passed, it would go into effect by Oct. 15.
