NCAA grants winter sport athletes extra year of eligibility

The NCAA has made the right move and granted all winter athletes an extra year of eligibility. The announcement was made on Wednesday evening and follows the decision made in August to grant fall athletes the same exception amid a global pandemic that continues to ravage the country.

The announcement came after a couple of days of conversation via videoconference from Division 1 Council members.

“The pandemic will continue to impact winter sport seasons in ways we can’t predict,” said M. Grace Calhoun, chair of the Division I Council and Penn athletic director. “Council members opted to provide for winter sport student-athletes the same flexibility given spring and fall sports previously. The actions today ensure the continuation of local decision-making in the best interest of each institution and its student-athletes.”

Now, it’ll be interesting to see what seniors for Ohio State winter sports may take advantage of the extra year. There’s still a scholarship issue to address, but don’t be surprised if those that come back are exempt from scholarship limits.
