Is NC State looking ahead to West Virginia?
The Wolfpack had few problems with East Carolina, but they weren’t razor-sharp in the 34-6 win, especially on third downs. WCU has to hope State is looking at this as merely a tune-up and doesn’t bring the intensity, at least early on, and the Catamount passing game has to get going right away.
Western Carolina was able to hang on to the ball and keep the offense on the field in the loss to Mercer, and Tyrie Adams threw for over 300 yards and ran for a score. The offense was able to put up some decent stats, but …
Why NC State Will Win
The numbers don’t tell the story against Mercer – the Catamounts were down 42-14 at halftime, and spent the second half throwing.
NC State only scored 34 in the win over East Carolina, but there weren’t any problems. The ground game punched out several big runs, QB Matt McKay had a solid performance for Week 1 – throwing for over 300 yards – and the defense shut down the Pirate offense cold.
The team was just good enough to win easily, and just off enough to need to try a bit to work on a few things like being better on third downs. That all means …
