It’s among the ACC’s best classes. It might be a fine top 25 class nationally, but for what it needs to be for the conference race, it’s strong. Dave Doeren didn’t get a whole slew of top-shelf guys, but there’s little waste or desperate fliers in a deep class.
There are some big-time guys, though, and they’re at defensive tackle. There were more tackles in last year’s class, but this guys being brought in this year are better prospects. Joshua Harris is a quick interior pass rushing talent who got pulled away from Clemson, and CJ Clark is more of a potential run stuffer who’s good enough to get Alabama and Georgia interested.
After going a wee bit light on defensive backs last season, this class is loaded for the secondary, starting with excellent corner prospect Shyheim Battle. It’s a deep group with several options to play around with.
Devin Leary was the big quarterback get in last year’s class. He’s not big, but he a deadly accuracy passer who’ll be right in the mix for the starting job this year, if not win it outright. Ty Evans is roughly the sam size as Leary, but he’s not considered to be the same talent. It’ll be stunning if he doesn’t redshirt.
Next year needs to be heavy on wide receivers. The 2018 class only brought in two prospects, and this one didn’t have any. However, Doeren signed on two tight ends who’ll be more like bigger receivers than blockers.
There’s a whole lot of depth at running back. There isn’t a projected talent like Ricky Person in last year’s class, but the three being brought in will soon be a key part of the rotation. Slippery back Zonovan Knight was going to Duke before flipping over the Pack. There aren’t any power runners, but that’s not really what the offense needs.
RB Jordan Houston was the best prospect to come in after the early signing period, but overall, the recruiting season was basically done at the end of December. The Pack had their class early on.
It’s strong enough. Doeren has carved out a niche in the ACC, but is this the class that can push the Pack over the top and into the conference championship discussion? Not without a few shockers, but it’s strong enough to keep NC State as a tough out.
