N.C. State announced on Monday that no fans will be allowed at football games at Carter-Finley Stadium through September.
"We understand this may be difficult news for Wolfpack nation, but given the information available to us at the current time, we are making the responsible decision to begin our season without spectators," athletic director Boo Corrigan said in a press release.
The Wolfpack football team opens the 2020 season at home against Wake Forest on Sept. 19. N.C. State will play five home games in 2020. There will be no tailgating for the season opener, Corrigan said in the release. The school will reevaluate after the opener. State plays only one home game in September.
Carter-Finley Stadium holds 57,600 fans. In seven home contests in 2019 a total of 395,264 fans attended games there.
Last week UNC announced that there will be no fans allowed in Kenan Stadium for the first month of the season. Duke won't allow fans in Wallace-Wade Stadium at all this season.
The Wolfpack football team resumed practice Monday after all athletic activities were delayed one week ago due to COVID-19 clusters on campus and within the athletics department. The university switched to online classes for the rest of the fall semester, then announced last week that all students have to move from their on-campus housing.
Athletes had to request a special waiver that would allow them to stay on campus.
N.C. State's first game of the season, at Virginia Tech on Sept. 12, was postponed until Sept. 26 due to the athletics department coronavirus cluster.
Last week the athletic department announced there would be no season ticket sales for 2020, only single game tickets. If State allows fans in starting the month of October season ticket holders will get advanced presale access for 2020 single game tickets.
