NC model addresses something lacking in Disney movies: people of her ethnicity

A Triangle model and makeup artist has gained international attention for her take on what some of the most popular Disney princesses might look like _ had any of them been from India.

Hamel Patel began rolling out a self-photo series on social media in late November. Her work caught on over the following month and has since gone viral, featured in pieces by BuzzFeed, Insider and Cosmopolitan, among others.

Patel explained her inspiration for the series in the caption of the first photo she released, on Instagram on Nov. 28.

"Growing up I always wished there was a Disney Princess I could relate to, one that represented where I came from," Patel wrote. "So I came up with this idea many months ago and I'm so happy how they turned out! Introducing outfits/makeup looks inspired by the eight original Disney Princesses we all grew up watching, with a little desi twist!"

The series began with "Snow White," followed by "Cinderella."

Next she was Aurora from "Sleeping Beauty" and then Ariel from "The Little Mermaid " complete with a dinglehopper.

Patel's other re-creations were Belle from "Beauty and the Beast," Jasmine from "Aladdin" and Pocahontas and Mulan.

Patel told Insider some people won't understand the series, but she thought it was a good idea.

"It gets a conversation going about representation, and it's something that should be talked about," she said.
