Boston Celtics All-NBA forward Jayson Tatum became the sole player in his franchise’s history to have three 50-point or greater games in a single season, but your guess is as good as ours is on where to find that last game in the official record books.
If that sounds confusing, it’s because it is — the NBA reportedly won’t be counting Tatum’s last 50-point game against the Washington Wizards in the league’s play-in game as a postseason contest, according to The Athletic. It also isn’t going to be counted as a regular-season game, leaving the feat in a yet-to-be-defined gray area for statistical achievements in the league.
The Athletic’s Joe Vardon makes the case that the game ought to be considered a postseason contest given it takes place after the 2020-21 regular season, and it’s hard to find fault in his argument.

In the grand scheme of things, this is an issue hardly worth quibbling over save for the completists among us who want our records structured consistently.
This seems like an easy fix, and hopefully one the league addresses post-haste.
