NBA, Pelicans release social justice phrases for player jerseys

The NBA officially released the social justice phrases for individual teams and players on Friday afternoon. Lonzo Ball had previously revealed that he would be sporting either “Equality” as his first choice or “Black Lives Matter” as his backup choice.

Along with Ball, Jaxson Hayes, E’Twaun Moore and Jahlil Okafor all will wear “Equality” on their jerseys and Nicolo Melli will have “Uguaglianza,” which is Italian for equality. Zylan Cheatham, Josh Hart, JJ Redick and Jrue Holiday all will have “Say Their Names” on the back of their jerseys.

Sindarius Thornwell is the only player who will have “Black Lives Matter” on his jersey. That phrase will also appear on the court for every game of the restart.

Here is the full list of phrases on each player’s jersey.

The Pelicans have been active in their fight against social justice as a whole roster. Holiday and his wife Lauren created the Jrue and Lauren Holiday Social Justice Impact Fund funded by Jrue’s game checks over the remainder of the restart, totaling over $5 million. Ball and Redick are also part of the Social Justice Leadership Coalition and Brandon Ingram recently donated nearly a thousand shoes to his hometown community.
