NBA legends Dirk Nowitzki and Dwayne Wade star in final home appearances

Tributes were paid to two of the iconic basketball players of their generation on Tuesday night.

Dirk Nowitzki announced his retirement after 21 years with the Dallas Mavericks, whilst Dwayne Wade marked his last home game with the Miami Heat with his career drawing to a close.

Fittingly, both players starred with 30 points apiece to help their teams to memorable victories ahead of their final farewells on the road.

German star Nowitzki has been the subject of plenty of speculation surrounding his future and officially announced his retirement after his best performance of the season helped the Mavericks win 120-109 against the Phoenix Suns.

They area already out of play-off contention, meaning the Dallas crowd were watching the 40-year-old for the final time before his last ever NBA game away at San Antonio on Wednesday.

LeBron James tipped to get some new big-name LA Lakers team-mates

Wade, meanwhile, has been on a farewell tour after announcing his intention to retire after a 16-year NBA career at the start of the season.

There were hopes Miami Heat could scrape into the play-offs, but a Detroit Pistons win over the Memphis Grizzlies ended their hopes.

Wade received a video tribute from former US president Barack Obamaas he marked his final home game with 30 points amid emotional scenes.

LeBron James is 'declining and should be put on the trade block'

He embraced his team-mates when he headed for the bench with just over a minute remaining in a 122-99 win over the Philadelphia 76ers.

Like Nowitzki, Wade will play his final game on Wednesday as their season draws to a close in Brooklyn against the Nets.

There was also shock news off the court to take some attention away from Nowitzki and Wade as legendary former player Magic Johnson announced his shock resignation of president of basketball operations at the Los Angeles Lakers after their play-off failure.
