From the moment the NBA settled on the Walt Disney World Resort complex to host the league’s restarted season, hotel accommodations were unsurprisingly a major topic amongst the teams.
Team personnel were concerned about the varying hotel quality within the Disney complex. They wondered if every team was going to get assigned a different hotel (we held a mock draft for that) or would several teams be grouped into hotels?
The NBA ultimately settled on three hotels and assigned those accommodations in tiers based on team record on Tuesday. It was a fair way to go about it.
After all, the best teams should get the best hotels. And while the three hotels selected — Gran Destino, Grand Floridian and the Yacht Club Resort — are all nice hotels, the six teams headed to the Yacht Club should expect plenty of jokes come July. It’s a label of mediocrity.
We already saw NBA fans bust out the hotel trash talk for the Yacht Club-bound Blazers, Kings, Pelicans, Spurs, Suns and Wizards. The jokes were so good.
And, again, the Yacht Club is by no means a bad hotel. It actually looks decent — just an older hotel.
But everybody is going to know who the Yacht Club Teams are, and nobody is going to want to lose to a Yacht Club Team.
