NBA commissioner Silver sends message to fans worldwide

NBA commissioner Adam Silver sent a message to league fans worldwide yesterday.

Silver related that the NBA’s operations would be suspended for a minimum of 30 days, and that the league would honor any tickets purchased for cancelled games at a later date.

Noting that the decision to suspend games was made in the interest of preserving fan, player and staff health, the league commissioner went on to discuss how the NBA plans to move forward while waiting for the pandemic situation to be brought under control.

“In the meantime, we will continue to coordinate with infectious disease and public health experts along with government officials to determine safe protocols for resuming our games. As we develop the appropriate course for future NBA games and events, we will keep you informed of any changes as soon as they happen.”

Should the league play games in arenas without fans as a precautionary measure, the league will “work with fans on a credit for a future game or a refund.”

Silver closed by directing fans to NBA.com, being sure to note that there are guidelines to help families stay safe from the virus on the website, and thanking them for their understanding in this most unusual turn of events.

“This remains a complicated and rapidly evolving situation that reminds us that we are all part of a broader society with a responsibility to look out for one another. That is what the NBA will continue to do, and we are grateful for your understanding and for being the best fans in sports.”

The reminder to care for one another is especially salient, and basketball — even when not being played — can continue to play a positive role in society, if only by reminding us we’re all in this together.
