A league investigation cleared the Cavaliers on their quick signing and waiving of ex-Golden State Warriors guard Patrick McCaw, the NBA announced Monday.
It found "no violation of the league's Collective Bargaining Agreement, including the anti-circumvention rules," according to a release.
On Jan. 8, Marc Stein of the New York Times reported that the Warriors had requested a formal review on McCaw. A restricted free agent, he did not report to Warriors camp and had not played all season when he signed a two-year, $6 million, non-guaranteed offer sheet with the Cavs on Dec. 28. Because of luxury tax ramifications, the Warriors declined to match two days later.
After playing 53 minutes and totaling five points, three rebounds and two assists in three games, McCaw was waived on Jan. 6. With Matthew Dellavedova bothered by a foot sprain, the Cavs signed backup point guard Cameron Payne to a 10-day contract the same day.
At issue was whether the Cavs made a deal with McCaw beforehand since he became an unrestricted free agent after he cleared waivers.
