With the release of NBA 2K26, it was only a matter of time before previous entries in the series were put on the chopping block. 2K Games just announced that online services for NBA 2K24 are getting a server sunset, which basically translates to the servers shutting down.
This shouldn’t come as too big a surprise for NBA 2K fans, as servers for NBA 2K23 were shut down in December 2024, which is in line with the 27-month lifespan for recent NBA games.
What Does A Server Shutdown Mean For You?
As you can probably guess, a server shutdown means that come January 1, 2026, 2K games will effectively cut off all online features. This, of course, permanently changes the way you play the game. The core losses include:
- MyCareer: Your created player will no longer be able to access The City, eliminating all online competitive and social play.
- MyTEAM: This card-collecting mode will become completely inaccessible. You can’t manage your roster, play matches, or participate in auctions.
- VC: You can’t earn or use VC anymore.
- Multiplayer & Community: Even community sharing features, such as Online Leagues and sharing custom rosters/draft classes, will be disabled
Essentially, anything that relies on an internet connection to function will not work. Steam Charts indicates that there are still a couple of thousand players engaging with the game on PC, and probably more on consoles. When servers shut down on December 31, 2025, any players still playing the game can get into the Play Now, MyNBA, The W, and MyWNBA modes.
Some value still lies in the simulation and management depth of MyNB. If you enjoy tinkering with team-building, running a franchise through rebuilds, and diving into the era of the NBA, there is still some fun to be ahead after the lights go out. Then again, this is a great time to get started with NBA 2K26.
