NBA 2K20: MyTeam Unlimited Has One Major Issue

At its core, MyTeam Unlimited is the best and most complete way to play NBA 2K20’s MyTeam mode.

However, there is an issue with it that only gets worse the deeper we get into the release cycle.

To put it plainly, the rewards don’t match the grind or challenge required to reach the highest point of MTU. The ultimate goal in MTU is to win 12 consecutive games against online opponents.

If you can do this, you win an exclusive Pink Diamond card, 8,000 MT and 20 tokens.

The card available changes each month, and if you can collect them all, you win a Galaxy Opal. Every time you lose a game, the max reward drops, because you’re only allowed to play 12 games.

For example, finishing 11-1 delivers a pack of cards from the Prime Series I: Tim Duncan set, 7,000 MT and 20 tokens. The prize drops proportionately with each defeat until your third loss and you’re eliminated. At that point, your record is reset and you’re awarded the prize you’ve earned.

This sounds straightforward, and it is, but it takes a lot of time. Also, going 12-0 isn’t an easy task.

Each game takes about a half hour to complete, which means if you’re able to play 12 games, you’re still spending six hours trying to attain the goal. Going 12-0 is something that is for a select group of players, which is fine, but there should be something a little more rewarding waiting for those who complete that journey.

The top prize awarded becomes less valuable the deeper you get into the experience.

For example, the Pink Diamond Clyde Drexler card wouldn’t even get a spot on my MTU or Triple Threat team at this point, so I’m not incentivized to go for the 12-0 record.

Because the MTU games take longer than any other contests in MyTeam, it’s discouraging to use for a combination of competition and grinding. If the rewards were a little more attractive, and perhaps increased in value as the season went on, it would offer more motivation to shoot for the top of the ladder.

Lastly, it makes no sense to have to wait until you’re eliminated to redeem your prizes. If gamers were given their packs, MT and/or tokens after every win, it would be encouraging to continue.

As it stands, you only get one prize package, and that comes when you’re eliminated or reach 12 wins. Instead, there should be a payout after every victory.

Many gamers I’ve spoken to will simply reset their record immediately if they lose one game. When they do this, they’re leaving the MTU experience with nothing but the MT they earned in the last contest.

It’s ill advised and not rewarding, but this type of exit can still leave a nasty taste in the gamer’s mouth. That’s ultimately not the desired result for the gamer or developers and publisher.
