Are we at, or at least near the end of the NBA 2K20 MyTeam content catalog?
The flow of new series has been nonstop through this release cycle, and has seemingly ramped up during quarantine.
Last week we saw the release of a Galaxy Opal Lamar Odom, which made a significant splash. To a lesser degree, the Galaxy Opal Kevin Love that highlighted the most recent Buzzer Beaters set was an additional bump.
However, neither of those releases are the kind of cards that steer the entire NBA 2K-related conversation toward MyTeam.
It takes the pursuit of the Galaxy Opal Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal, LeBron James, or another of the game’s current greats to make that sort of splash.
If we take a look at what has already been released for NBA 2K20 MyTeam, there are only three cards out there that could still shake things up in May.
These cards haven’t been announced, but as we play process of elimination in anticipation of the last pieces of content before all attention is directed toward NBA 2K21, the trio below would make sense.
Galaxy Opal Giannis Antetokounmpo
Most of the Antetokounmpo cards play a level above their gem status because of his model’s passive strengths. This means the 98-overall, Glitched Pink Diamond Antetokounmpo already feels like a Galaxy Opal.
If there is a way to go with a next-level Giannis, it would be a Galaxy Opal version of the Bucks star that can play all five positions.
That would be the ultimate card in the mode, and not too unrealistic overall. However, there would be some backlash for that card. 2K introduced position lock before this year’s game was released and some have argued this restriction has been circumvented by fantasy concepts (imagine that in a fantasy mode) that have players playing multiple positions–one of which they would never play in real life.
An Antetokounmpo card that could play all five positions wouldn’t be much of a stretch, and it would create great interest.
That said, it would also cause many members of the 2K community to rail against the concept as they say it breaks the position lock restriction. Perhaps we’ll revisit that one at a later time.
Galaxy Opal Kawhi Leonard
Coming off a season that saw him win an NBA Championship and Finals MVP, it’s kind of odd not to see Leonard with a Galaxy Opal card. As of now, his highest card is a 98-overall Pink Diamond All-Star Moments edition.
The card is strong for sure, but on principle alone, shouldn’t the reigning Finals MVP have a Galaxy Opal?
Galaxy Opal Zion Williamson
The league’s most polarizing rookie already has a Pink Diamond that was popular for a while, but there is no question there would be a massive interest in a Galaxy Opal Zion Williamson.
There was a new dynamic duo boost introduced for Williamson and Galaxy Opal Lonzo Ball that gave the rookie a bump, but it doesn’t push him into the top tier.
2K is likely missing out on some of the New Orleans Pelicans rookie’s mass appeal with the season being interrupted and thus no opportunity for him to have the kind of individual performance that produces a Galaxy Opal card.
I’m positive a Galaxy Opal Zion would move the needle, even in May.
