Naya Rivera's Glee castmates gathered at Lake Piru moments before her body was found

Naya Rivera's former Glee castmates reunited at Lake Piru in California, moments before mourning the loss of the tragic star.

The group took to the lake where their co-star went missing on Wednesday, and gathered before the water where her body was later found on Monday.

It's reported they shouted: "Say her name - Naya!" as they were hopeful in finding the 33-year-old actress.

But authorities later confirmed it was Naya's body found in the lake.

The Glee star, who played Santana Lopez in Glee, went missing last week after going on a boat trip with her son Josey, four, and fears grew for her safety as she didn't return back with him.

The cast were pictured standing hand-in-hand before they were told the tragic news.

They overlooked the waters where pontoon boats were pitched up at the side, where Naya first got on.

Other photos show the stars cuddling and comforting each other as they were saddened by the news which they had later learnt.

Ventura County Police department revealed it's likely that Naya used the last of her energy to save her son, who returned to shore safely.

The news was confirmed by Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub in a press conference this evening.

During the press conference, Mr Ayub shared some tragic details in the minutes leading up to Naya's death.

"We believe it was mid-afternoon when she disappeared.

"The idea perhaps being that the boat started drifting, it was unanchored, and that she mustered enough energy to get her son back into the boat, but not enough to save herself."

He also revealed that police are "confident" that the body was Naya.

He said: "Based on the location where the body was found, physical characteristics of the body, clothing found on the body, and the physical condition of the body, as well as the absence of any other persons reported missing in the area, we are confident the body we found is that of Naya Rivera."

He said the fact that no other missing people have been reported also contributed to their decision.

Josey was found sleeping on the boat wrapped in a towel and wearing a life jacket.

He told investigators he and his mother went swimming and he got back on the boat, but "his mum never made it out of the water."

Police said there is no evidence of foul play or suicide.
