The Royal Thai Navy (RTN) has launched an urgent investigation after allegations surfaced on social media that a navy conscript was subjected to severe physical abuse by fellow servicemen in what is believed to be a hazing incident.
Rear Adm Parach Rattanachaiyan, RTN spokesman, said the navy had been made aware of the allegations and that commanders had ordered an immediate fact-finding inquiry. A formal investigation committee has been set up to gather evidence and ensure a thorough and impartial examination of the case.
The navy said disciplinary and criminal action would be taken against those responsible if the investigation finds violations of military regulations or the law.
"The Royal Thai Navy does not tolerate violence, bullying or punishment outside the scope of the law," the spokesman said, adding that the service remained committed to protecting the human rights, welfare and safety of all personnel, and would conduct a transparent investigation.
According to media reports, preliminary findings suggest the incident may have stemmed from an initiation or hazing practice involving senior conscripts and newly enlisted personnel. However, officials stressed that the exact circumstances have yet to be officially established.
The case is reportedly the same one highlighted by social activist Kanthat Pongpaiboonwet, also known as "Kan Jompalang", who said a conscript had sought his help after allegedly being subjected to repeated abuse inside a military camp.
