Why Navy Will Win
And there’s the Navy offense we all know and love.
The Midshipmen have only played two games so far, and they haven’t faced anyone who’ll be pushing for the College Football Playoff, but the ground attack is rolling exactly like it’s supposed to. Navy leads the nation averaging 372 yards per game, with more of a methodical style than an explosive one.
QB Malcolm Perry is the team’s leading rusher, but he’s connecting on his deep passes, too, averaging 16 yards per throw on his 16 attempts. But can Memphis stop the run?
The Tigers aren’t quite getting into the backfield like they did in past years, but they’ve been solid up front so far. They haven’t faced a ground attack like this, though. Navy is rested, it’s had two weeks to prepare, and this should be Perry’s show.
Why Memphis Will Win
The Memphis defense hasn’t seen anything like what Navy does, but it’s still been effective.
How do you slow down what the Midshipmen do? Stay in your lanes, don’t try to do too much, and get into the backfield to stop plays before they start. Memphis can do all of that.
How do you also slow this thing down? Control the clock. Memphis might not have all of its stars in the backfield – Patrick Taylor has been banged up – but the O is able to dominate the time of possession battle, partly because the D is so great at getting off the field.
Own third downs, get to Perry before he gets comfortable, and stall ball it up to keep the defense from getting gassed. Memphis can do that.

What’s Going To Happen
It’s a battle of the American Athletic Conference unbeatens. It’s not for the West title, but with both teams playing big division battles coming up, it might as well be an elimination game.
The Memphis defense really is just that good. It’s got the veterans, and it has had the time with two weeks off to figure out how to slow down this rushing machine. The Tigers won’t stop the thing cold, but they’ll win enough battles to not let Perry take over.
