Navi Mumbai: Two cops return Rs 4 lakh found in accident victims' scooter

NAVI MUMBAI: Two beat marshal constables, Manohar Patil and Kishor Kardile, were felicitated for their honesty on Tuesday after they secured Rs 4 lakh belonging to a couple who died in a road accident and deposited it at the police station. The money was handed over to the victims' son after the felicitation.

The deceased was a senior citizen couple returning home after withdrawing the money for their Haj pilgrimage when they met with a fatal accident on the Mumbra-Panvel road on May 12.

Patil and Kardile were on duty and on receiving a wireless message, rushed to the spot. They took the injured couple-Khalil Shaikh (65) with his wife Farhat Shaikh (60)-to hospital where they were declared brought dead. They found the huge amount of cash under the scooter's seath when they started searching for their identity papers.

RS 4 lakh was for Haj, cops return it to couple's son

Two constables of Taloja police station, Manohar Patil and Kishor Kardile, were felicitated on Tuesday for securing and returning Rs 4 lakh found in the scooter of a couple who died in a road accident. "They took the cash in their custody and deposited the money at the police station, which is indeed an act of honesty. On Tuesday, the deceased couple's kin were called to Taloja police station and handed over Rs 4 lakh cash," said senior inspector of Taloja Jitendra Sonawane. Constables Patil and Kardile were felicitated by DCP (zone-2) Shivraj Patil.

The couple's scooter had skidded after hitting a speedbreaker on the road and a container trailer coming from behind had run them over. The container driver was arrested and booked for rash and negligent driving causing death.

"When the constables found a large amount of cash in the couple's scooter, they took the cash in their safe custody and immediately informed me," said Sonawane. "We traced the couple's son who informed us that his parents had got approval for Haj pilgrimage and had withdrawn Rs 4 lakh for their expenses," he added.
