Navi Mumbai: Transporter electrocuted at APMC market, activists allege criminal negligence

NAVI MUMBAI: The tragic electrocution of a transporter in his late fifties at the APMC grain market in Vashi recently, has led the activists to demand a thorough inquiry into the case as they alleged criminal negligence by the MSEDCL.

The incident occurred on March 19 at the APMC market's power sub-station of MSEDCL.

The victim, Dhirendra Maru (57), received a high voltage shock inside the sub-station. He eventually died a few days at Sion hospital in Mumbai.

"I spoke to Maru's family, and they are aggrieved", said the RTI activist Anarjit Chauhan, who submitted a written complaint demanding an inquiry into the case.

Maru, a Ghatkopar resident, had been working as a transporter at APMC for the past 35 years. Activists and also a few local traders want to know as to how anyone could enter inside the power sub-station in the grain market.

"MSEDCL has now sealed the power sub-station with a metal sheet, so that no one can enter inside the room where the transformer is kept. However, why have the authorities only reacted now after one life has been lost? This is criminal negligence," said Chauhan.

The MSEDCL executive engineer S Borse said that he would not be able to comment on the issue at present since over 80% of his staff was on strike.

"If no action is taken in the case, then I will ask the President of India to request the Maharashtra DGP to lodge a complaint under IPC sections 119, 120, 409, 34 apart from sectiona 3, 10 & 11 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, 1967, section 3 and 4 of the Damage to Public Property Act, 1984, and under the Consumer Protection Act, 1986, on the concerned officials and staffs, including the higher authorities of the circle", he added.
