Navi Mumbai gets 260mm rainfaill, in Thane, man feared drowned

MUMBAI: Heavy rain lashed most parts of MMR, including Thane and Navi Mumbai, resulting in incidents of compound and retaining wall collapse, waterlogging, tree fall incidents and traffic jams on Sunday.

A Thane resident is feared to have drowned in a nullah, while a woman resident of Mumbra suffered injuries after a tree branch collapsed on her house.

“We were alerted that a 30-year-old man identified as Jeevan Owhal had fallen in the nullah at Ambedkar Road in UIthalsar area. He wasn’t found till evening,” informed Santosh Kadam, chief of Thane regional disaster management cell.

Navi Mumbai received 260mm rainfall in the last 36 hours, beginning 8am on Saturday, with Koparkhairane registering the highest rain among all nodes with 295mm. Heavy rains post-midnight left over 18 spots water-logged in Thane and suburban areas of Mumbra and Diva. The city received 182.36mm of rainfall in the 12-hour period ending at 8.30am on Sunday, the official said.
