Navan Road residents send strong message to NTA with yellow ribbon protest to save trees ' from destruction'

Residents of the Navan Road have hit back at plans by the National Transport Authority (NTA) to slash 140 trees from the area as part of a new BusConnects project.

Members of the Navan Road Community Council has tied yellow ribbons around the trees, sending a clear message to the NTA that they won't let them be chopped without a fight.

One resident has also created an online petition to "Save the Trees on the Navan Road from destruction".

Stephen O'Loughlin started the petition earlier this week and has received 643 signatures of support.

He said: "There are other options and we ask that the trees are protected and all options are discussed with local residents.

"Residents are very aware of the need to better public transport infrastructure to help combat climate change and stand over the promises made under Paris Climate Agreement which Ireland signed up to but the felling of trees should be a last resort.

"Please sign and share this petition to demand engagement with those who will be affected most by the poor choice of felling these mature trees. "

In a statement to Dublin Live, a spokesperson for the NTA said: "BusConnects has received a number of submissions from interested parties in the area at each of the three rounds of non-statutory public consultations we have held since 2018.

"There has also been a number of meetings with stakeholders in the area in relation to their issues about the proposals.

"The number of trees likely to be impacted along this area of the CBC Route may be up to approximately 140 trees.

"However as part of planned urban realm enhancements, it is intended to plant an equivalent number of semi-mature trees along the corridor to offset the impact.

"Overall the route, once upgraded, will benefit from both an improved walking, cycling, and public transport infrastructure, and an enhanced urban realm treatment."

Dublin Live has contacted the Navan Road Community Council for comment.
