Nature reserve urges people to look out for illegal hunters

Officials are urging locals to look out for illegal hunters at a nature reserve in Bridgend County Borough.

Parc Slip Nature Reserve has launched an investigation after being told organised hunts were taking place at the site.

A spokesperson for the park, which is located on Fountain Rd, Aberkenfig, Bridgend, said staff received reports of "hunt activity" taking place on the reserve, which they are "currently investigating" .

They added: "We are also reminding visitors to not put themselves in danger or approach the group."

The reserve is urging locals to "be vigilant" and report any hunting on the site to them and to the police by calling 101.

Parc Slip is a 300-acre nature reserve with more than 1,000 species of wildlife such as kestrels, harvest mice and endangered newts.

An opencast coal mine was previously located on the site, which is now run by the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales.

In a statement made on the reserve's Facebook page, officials said:

"This is NOT acceptable and we would NEVER give permission for this to take place on our land.

"We are in touch with the appropriate authorities and will take action if this happens again."

In the UK, hunters must have permission from the land owner to hunt on their land.

Anyone caught hunting illegally or causing unnecessary suffering to an animal can be fined or sent to jail.

The reserve spokesperson would not disclose where and when the hunting incidents were said to have occurred or what type of hunting allegedly took place. However, they said further details will be provided once the investigation reveals "more information".
