There’s no limit to hair colours, as funky red, yellow, blue and green are among the 64 shades shelved at the Beauty Library, a vintage-style hair and beauty salon located on Sukhumvit 33.
The salon was inspired by a daughter’s love for her mother, who couldn’t tolerate chemical-based hair colour, as well as the smell of ammonia.
The daughter’s research for non-irritating options came across those by British company Organic Colour Systems, whose hair colour, perming and straightening — as well as haircare products — are formulated with the minimum amount of chemicals.
The permanent hair dyes are claimed to be made without ammonia, a hair-follicle-swelling agent that allows the absorption of the dye, and resorcinol commonly used along with peroxide for bonding the dye to hair. It is also formulated without the controversial preservative paraben.
The ammonia-free hair colour is a part of making the Beauty Library a healthy salon. The ventilation is also driven by a medical-grade air purifier. This is not only for the wellness of the clients but for the team of hairdressers.
A consultation takes place before the colouring process, which begins with a pre-colour treatment. The detox is particularly important for chemically-treated hair so that the hair dye can effectively work in covering greys or achieving longer-lasting overall hair colour, ombre and balayage.
A damaged mane can be rescued by moisturising, protein or collagen replenishing treatments with the haircare range by the Hampshire-based brand.
English-, Chinese- and Japanese-speaking staff are also on site to welcome international clients into the library-themed salon, which opened its doors in mid-2017.
The reception area has a bookshelf wall with titles on health and beauty, for a good read while having one’s hair coloured, starting at 3,500 baht.
