John Barilaro handed Scone a new town square on Tuesday and promoted the government's investment in Upper Hunter Shire roads as the Nationals approach a key by-election on Saturday.
The Deputy Premier joined candidate Dave Layzell in Scone to announce $2 million funding for a public square in St Aubins Street as reward for the shire council cutting its development application processing times.
They also pointed to the state's contribution to $15 million in recent or ongoing road upgrades in the area, including to Bunnan Road, Moonan Brook Road and Barrington Tops Forest Road.
Mr Barilaro announced two weeks ago a $25 million repair package for Dungog Council's substandard roads.
The government has commissioned an independent report into reclassifying up to 15,000 kilometres of council roads in NSW to bring them under state control.
The independent panel delivered an interim report and recommendations for priority road transfers to the government last year.
