Native title declared over Port Augusta

The Federal Court will hold a special native title sitting in Port Augusta. (AAP)

The Federal Court will hold a ceremonial sitting in South Australia's mid-north to recognise the Barngarla people as the native title holders of the Port Augusta region.

The ceremony will be held in the town's Gladstone Square on Friday and will be presided over by Justice Natalie Charlesworth.

The Barngarla Aboriginal Corporation says Port Augusta's inclusion within the native title claim follows the same recognition of both Whyalla and Port Lincoln.

"To finally have native title recognition over this area makes us overwhelmingly happy," the corporation said in a statement.

"This is our country. It always has been and it always will be.

"Now we can finally celebrate on our land, knowing that the entire world knows what we have known all along."
