Nationals MP Russell Northe takes leave for mental health issues

Russell Northe stood down from the shadow ministry in December.

Victorian Nationals MP Russell Northe is taking indefinite leave from Parliament to seek medical help for depression.

Federal Nationals MP Darren Chester made the announcement on Thursday afternoon on behalf of Mr Northe, who represents the seat of Morwell, in the state's south-east.

"I have no doubt the stress of public life has made it more difficult for my friend to deal with his own issues," Mr Chester said.

"The Latrobe Valley has dealt with extraordinary challenges over the past decade, and Russell has worked tirelessly to support the community."

Mr Northe stood down from his position in the shadow ministry in December, to spend more time in his electorate to deal with the closure of the Hazelwood power station.

He revealed his mental health challenges to colleagues at a recent National Party room meeting.

"The length of Russell's leave will depend on advice from his medical professionals," Victorian Nationals leader Peter Walsh said.

Mental Health Minister Martin Foley said Mr Northe should be applauded for making the courageous decision to take the time to look after his mental health.

"It's important all of us are aware of the importance of good mental health — and take time when we need it," he said.

The National Party has asked that the privacy of Mr Northe, and that of his wife Jenny and sons, is respected.

Mr Northe was first elected in 2006.

He held onto the seat of Morwell at the 2014 Victorian election by polling 51.8 per cent of the vote, with an 11.5 per cent swing against him.

He is not the first state MP to take leave in this term of Parliament.

In 2016, then-Police Minister Wade Noonan also took leave to address mental health issues, citing exposure to trauma experienced during the course of his job.

In March this year, former speaker Telmo Languiller took a month off to tackle depression and high blood pressure.
