Little has gone right for the Washington Nationals this season. It’s only May, but Washington has the second-worst record in the National League (only the Marlins are worse). And they’ve found new, painful ways to lose like turning a routine grounder into a walk-off infield single.
Those frustrations boiled over during Thursday’s game against the Mets.
Manager Dave Martinez emerged from the dugout after Howie Kendrick was ejected for arguing a check-swing strikeout in the eighth inning. Kendrick wouldn’t be heading to the clubhouse alone because, well, Martinez went off on home plate umpire Bruce Dreckman.
When Dreckman inevitably ejected the Nationals manager, Martinez went into full tantrum mode and kicked dirt over the plate.
That is a very angry baseball man.
At the time, the ejection did seem to spark the Nationals. They rallied to take a 4-3 lead in the eighth before allowing three runs the following inning.
That’s how this season has been going for the Bryce Harper-less Nationals.
