Nationalists set up protest demo at border in bid to keep Scotland 'Covid-19 free'

Scottish nationalists staged a protest at the border wearing full PPE to keep Scotland 'free of Covid-19'.

The demonstrators in white hooded hazmat suits and saltire masks set-up on the A1 to 'stop and test' people travelling from England into Scotland.

The group were reacting to figures presented by Nicola Sturgeon that Scotland's rate of coronavirus infection is five-times less than England's.

One of the protesters posted a video of the demonstrators setting up shop on the border.

In the video he says: “So here we are guys. The first ‘yes’ putting of 2020.

“As you can see, everybody is extremely safe, because they’re all well suited up.”

Photographs show the group, including a dog, wearing full protective gear beside the 'Welcome to Scotland' sign.

They are also pictured holding signs that read: "Staycation keep Scotland Covid free."

The protest comes as the Scottish Government warned of a possible increase in cases as Scots travel south to England to take advantage of the easing of lockdown restrictions including pub openings.

Tory MSP, Annie Wells, slammed the demo. (Twitter)

The demonstration was slammed by Tory MSP, Annie Wells on Twitter.

She wrote the word ‘disgraceful’ alongside a retweet of colleague, Jamie Halcro Johnston, who also hit out against the protest.

The Tory MSP wrote: “Appalling. This is the result of dog-whistle rhetoric about closing borders. I hope you are dealing with this Police Scotland.”
