A nationalised shipyard has announced plans to hire 120 temporary workers to work a seven day week to help complete two over budget and overdue ferries.
Ferguson Marine in Port Glasgow is looking to recruit pipe fitters and steel workers, stating that the extra staff would “secure the long-term future of the shipyard".
The six month contracts will be to work on the hull 802 and mv glen sannox ferries for Caledonian Maritime Assets.
Controversy over the financials of building the new ferries at Ferguson Marine shipyard in Inverclyde led to the state takeover, after the yard went into administration in 2019.
Four years later, the cost of the dual-fuel ships has risen to a fixed price contract of £97m - more than double the initial estimate.
The extra workers will mean the shipyard can work seven day weeks during the spring and summer - starting from 19 March - bringing the total number of workers to more than 500.
The yard has taken on more than 100 extra staff in the past year, including 25 young people after reintroducing its apprentice programme.
The ongoing coronavirus restrictions and overstretched time scale have meant the yard is currently looking for UK-based workers only to deliver the ships in six months time.
